March 2022

We have had a busy end to February and beginning of March, and have lots more coming up this month! It has been so lovely to welcome you all back onto site this month and the children have loved being able to show their parents where they play and what they all do at nursery.

A few parents have raised concerns regarding the turning from the Saltford direction again. There is no right turn this way into the nursery, and you will need to go around the roundabout to enter the nursery. This has worried some parents when walking due to cars turning in from the wrong direction.

We will be celebrating the Hindu festival Holi the festival of colour, spring and love. Lots of activities are planned including making our own paint from flowers. This will taking place all week.

Wednesday 16th March is Beep, Beep Day and we will be looking and talking about road safety.

Friday 18th March- Comic Relief Day- Please can all children wear pyjamas to nursery. We will have a donation pot at the front if you would like to donate.

Week beginning- Monday 21st March

We will be celebrating Mothers Day all week. We would like to welcome Mums in on collection between 4.45pm-5.15pm to join their children for a story time, singing or activity on pick up. This will be taking place in all Rooms Monday-Friday.

We have been busy planting sunflowers for World Down Syndrome Day, and we are raising money for PADS by asking you to bring £1 to buy your child’s sunflower. This will be available all week to purchase.

On Thursday 24th March we ask all children and staff to come to nursery wearing mismatched socks too!

Frida’s Mum has written a piece to give you some more info!

You may see Snapdragons Keynsham celebrating World Down syndrome Day throughout March. The day itself is 21 March 2022, the 21st day of the third month. This is because a person with Down syndrome has 3 copies of chromosome 21 rather than the typical 2. This is a great opportunity to ask questions and maybe learn a bit more about Down syndrome. But for now, I wanted to introduce a couple of the activities that your child might like to participate in and why.

I am mum to Frida who is currently in the Baby Cottage. We are delighted at how well she has settled into nursery, how much fun she is having and how many friends she has already.

Frida’s favourite word is ‘star’. She has been working hard at pronouncing the ’s’ sound and is just about there with it now. Frida says several other words including family names and a very clear ‘whats that?’ and ‘who’s that?’, but perhaps not as many as most 19 month olds. That said, I am pretty certain that she has more Makaton signs than many toddlers of her age.

Makaton is a communication tool. Unlike British Sign Language, (think Rose from Strictly Come Dancing this year). Makaton (think Mr Tumble and Singing Hands) is a way of bridging the gap towards speaking, enabling earlier communication and reducing frustration. When a word or phrase is spoken, this is accompanied with a sign and, if necessary, a symbol. Most kids are visual learners, so what better than to have 3 ways to receive information? Hearing the words and phrases, and seeing them in a sign and a symbol reinforces understanding and gives an opportunity to build communication skills long before words come along. A quick google will often result in a video of someone demonstrating a sign, so it is easy to pick up the basics without even doing a course - or you can just watch Mr. Tumble on repeat like we do. It can be a lot of fun to learn something new and even more fun to see your young child asking for something (usually snacks!), or telling you something long before they can use words.

Because Frida has Down syndrome we knew that she was likely to have speech delay. In order to support her communication we introduced Makaton from a very early age. We had used sign language with our eldest daughter when she was a baby so it was something that came easily to us.  Because all of us in our family (including grandparents) enjoy it and use it consistently, Frida has developed a really good repertoire of signs. She has an impressive range of animal signs (and sounds) and can make herself understood using signs and her limited spoken language.. When she started at Snapdragons, the staff in the Baby Cottage went on a Makaton training course and use signing with her to great effect. I found that her signing improved when she realised that it was something that was done outside of home as well. Within a couple of weeks, Frida was telling staff with her signs that she was tired and wanted to go to sleep - something I had never seen her do at home. I know that when she does start speaking, her knowledge of words will not have suffered because she is building a good bank of vocabulary by signing. She knows many more words than she can sign and understands most things we say to her - in fact she appears to have the same level of understanding of words as most kids her age.

So why am I telling you all of this? Well, primarily because I encourage everyone to introduce basic signs to their own children to help them communicate - which in turn reduces frustration associated with not feeling understood, and, because Frida will be moving through the nursery into preschool in the coming 2 and a half years, it would be great to think that her peers can interact with her and understand what she is signing to them and sign back to her - that is true inclusion.

To get the ball rolling and in celebration of World Down syndrome Day, Snapdragons Keynsham has committed to bringing back the ‘sign of the month’ - so I am hopeful that this will spark the same love of Makaton with your children that it has with ours. (please see sign in above part of the Newsletter)

Other things your child might get involved in are completing some learning packs teaching them the very basics of what it is to have Down syndrome, wearing mismatched socks, reading books and planting a sunflower seed and watching it grow. All of these things will hopefully gently introduce the concept that whilst there might be some differences, being different can be good and that everyone has their own unique individual characteristics that make them the brilliant person that they are. We hope your child enjoys them.

Frida is lucky - she has been born in a time where there is a lot of research about how to best support young children with Down syndrome to reach their full potential, whatever that might be for each individual. Sadly, due to outdated perceptions, this has not always been the case. One of the organisations working hard to provide support to new parents from pregnancy and beyond is ‘Positive About Down syndrome (PADS).’

PADS has given us all the tools we needed to provide the best start to Frida. This includes access to subsidised Makaton, speech & language, development, physio and potty training courses. It brings together experts to support families via their Facebook groups and peer-to-peer support which has resulted in groups of friends emerging all over the country as a vast support network. The team behind PADS also works hard to promote the rights of people with Down syndrome and provides counselling support to families who initially struggle with having a child with additional needs.

We are hoping that your child will want to take home their sunflowers at the end of the month and wear mismatched socks and would be grateful for a £1 suggested donation to go to PADS to help them to continue to do the excellent work that they do.

Please do not hesitate to get in touch with me if you would like any more reading ideas or information. I also have a blog - Frida’s Footsteps, which has more information about Frida and the things we do on it.

December 2021

We are in the final few weeks of 2021 before welcoming a New Year! We have had lots going on this month with Nativity for pre-school at the end of November, Christmas parties, lunch, and a jumper day.

We just want to take this opportunity to thank you all for your continued support. It has been very much appreciated during this year of uncertain times.

Just to clarify, we close on Christmas Eve and we then reopen on Tuesday 4th January 2022 for all children.

Please can we ask parents that you only park in the spaces just beyond the disabled bay if you have two or more children to bring into nursery. We have lots of siblings who attend, and with watching the traffic into the car park and belongings, its easier if they use those ones.

Just to remind all parents who have children going to school in 2022, please remember that applications for school places close in January so ensure you have completed the form through the council website.

Our lovely Sophie (butterflies), Halle and Anna will be leaving us at the end of this year and Kayleigh will also be starting her maternity leave. Sophie and Halle are both having complete change of careers, and Anna is starting work closer to her home. Sophie and Halle started with us as Apprentices and have been with us for 4 years! We will miss them all so much and thank them for everything they have done for all the children over the years.

Books of the month

December 2021- Gruffalo’s Child, The Elves and the shoe maker

January 2022- The Tiger who came to tea, Poems for the very young

We wish you a lovely Christmas and look forward to seeing you all in the New Year!

November 2021

Babies all dressed up for our Spooky Spark Day!

We can’t believe we are nearly at the end of November, and December is round the corner!

We have had an action packed few weeks; hosting our Spooky Spark day, having Dinosaurs in for a visit, talking about Remembrance and making smores on the fire!

Thank you so much to all parents who were able to attend our Spooky Spark evening and were able to make smores on the fire at collection. It was so lovely to have parents back in again for an event, even if it is was more scaled back than usual. All the rooms made their own Halloween scarecrows that we went round the nursery to find in the morning. The kitchen also made use a special spooky themed menu!

Thank you also to all families who have helped with our recent fundraising. We have managed to raise £97 for Breast Cancer when we wore pyjamas for the day, and last Friday we raised a MASSIVE £166 for Children in Need from our bake sale. Thank you all so much for your continued support and for everyone who took the time to bake and buy a treat!

We were also lucky to have Kitty’s Mum, who works for different Museums, come in and visit us. She had kindly borrowed some amazing fossils and dinosaur figures from the Somerset Museum and came in and talked to the children all about them.

We looked at the importance of Remembrance, and at photos of poppies and used these to inspire our own pictures. We even created our own stickers, and looked at Sir Captain Tom Moore and all the things he had done in his lifetime.

Our Poppy stickers

Pre-school enjoyed a visit from ZooLab who brought in lots of unusual animals for us to hold.

Up and coming Dates

We will have lots of Christmas bits going on throughout December, but for events like parties we have had to rethink the structure of these and unfortunately will not be able to invite all parents and children in for this, like pre-covid.

Tuesday 7th December- Christmas parties to take place in the afternoon. This will be for children in this session.

Wednesday 15th December- Christmas jumper and lunch day

Friday 17th December- Last day for term time only children

Friday 24th December- last day for all year round children.

Fun at the forest site.

Fun at the forest site.

We can’t believe we are heading for November! We have had such a jam packed October! The children have been exploring an array of interests from making their own salt dough hedgehogs in Toddlers to designing their own star constellation pictures in pre-school. We have been using the Autumn to our advantage by playing in leaves, making conker necklaces and starting to look at pumpkins.

It is our lovely Felicity’s last day with us on Monday. We wish her so much luck in her new role. We have recently had Molly join us who will be our Administrator on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The lovely Kira will also be our Unit Co-ordinator for the Baby Rooms. They may have to ask questions at drop off/ pick whilst getting to know everyones faces.

We love getting messy and the children love exploring a wide range of creative activities. However some children do not always like putting on aprons as they restrict their movements and some of the older children also choose not to experience these skills as they don’t like putting aprons on. We want to protect the children’s clothes as much as possible so we thought it might be a good idea if anyone has any old t-shirts or shirts to donate for us to use over clothes that would be fantastic!!

Picking blackberries in our garden

Picking blackberries in our garden

September seems to be going so fast with lots going on at nursery. We have welcomed lots of new families and children to the setting and waved goodbye to our pre-schoolers at the end of last month. We have been starting to explore Autumn with collecting blackberries and conkers, watching the leaves fall from the tress and enjoy those last bits of sunshine.

It has been so lovely welcoming parents back onto site. it really brings such a lovely feel back to the nursery and the staff have been able to share more of what the children do with you, as well as you seeing where they grow and play. Please remember we ask parents to wear masks when coming into nursery. Pre-school parents are asked to drop off children at the gate by the pre-school door but to come through the main nursery for collection. Toddlers are to use the main entrance for both drop off and collection and Babies are asked to buzz the camera for entry at the grey door as before. Early drop off slots please come to the main door for drop offs. When coming in for collection we ask that all doors and gates are closed behind you.

Please can we ask again that parents when driving into the nursery from the Saltford direction go around the roundabout and not across the traffic as our neighbours have witnessed near misses with cars doing this. Please also can cars drive slowly out of the drive way in case there are pedestrians walking by.

Please can we remind you to bring in a named water bottle or cup for your little one. We ask that these contain water only and all children bring their own individual cup.

August 2021

imgpsh_mobile_save.jpg

We have had lots going on in August, with life opening back up, children going on holidays and preparing to leave us for school. We have been celebrating birthdays, preparing for Graduation and looking after our butterflies in the garden.

As of the 6th of September we are looking forward to welcoming you all back in to collect your children and see them having fun with their friends! Drop offs in the mornings will stay as they are with Pre-School, Toddlers and Babies all using separate entrances and staff coming to collect children from outside.

For pick up times, we would still like Baby parents to buzz at the baby door and then you will be able to go into the baby rooms to collect. For Pre-school and Toddlers, you will need to come to the front entrance and then you can walk through the nursery to your child’s room. Please use the hand gel on entry to the nursery.

I know we have mentioned this in previous newsletters, but we have had concerned calls from residents opposite the nursery regarding parents and visitors turning right into the nursery when coming from the Saltford direction. This is a slip road for those houses only and you will need to go round the roundabout to turn left into the nursery.

With September approaching please ask your child’s key person if their wellies still fit etc so we are ready for the Autumn!

Staff News

We have lots to celebrate at Keynsham this month!

Cat in Pre-School will be leaving us in the next few months to have her baby girl! Aimee our lunch cover in Babies will also be leaving around the same time to have a baby boy and Kayleigh in Babies is due to have her baby early next year. We will give you updates of the new arrivals when we have them!

Wow what a month July has been! We have been enjoying the warmer weather and have been saying goodbye to some of our children who have started to leave for school!

We have some exciting news to share at Snapdragons, Keynsham! Our lovely Ella (EYP and Deputy Manager) has been successful in her interview for the Managers role at Snapdragons, Cribbs Causeway. Ella has worked at Keynsham with us for nearly 4 years and had the role of Head of Pre-school before becoming Deputy Manager. She has had such a positive impact here and we are going to miss her energy and smiley face but we know she will be amazing at her new role!

Please can we remind parents to bring in a cup or water bottle for your child to use throughout the day. Can I also remind you that it should contain water only. We do not promote squash at Snapdragons as it does damage children’s teeth.

Graduation will be happening on Saturday 21st August and it looks likely we will do it in time slots for groups. We will aim for these to happen in the morning and finish around lunchtime. We will be in touch with more details in August.

Please remember to carefully read Hayley’s COVID update emails as there has been some changes on how we deal with positive cases and the isolation period. Also, she has mentioned in the email that if children have a temperature, they will not be able to return to nursery until they are 24 hours fever free. Please had a read to fully understand the new guidance and if you have any questions please feel free to drop us an email.

We can’t believe the end of June is so near! Its been another busy month at Snapdragons, Keynsham. We have been enjoying the sunshine when it makes an appearance, we have had parents evenings and we have also been liaising with the school ready for the children starting in September.

We apologise again for an inconvenience caused by the cancellation of the Open day on Saturday due to unforeseen circumstances. We have rescheduled this for Saturday 10th July from 9.30am. Please let the office know or drop us an email if you would like a slot. We are also able to offer show rounds now so alternatively please feel free to book an individual slot during the week if you would prefer.

Thank you to all parents completing the focus child sheets for our planning. The response has been fantastic! These will now be send via email rather than given out and then we can print them once completed.

Tim our Outdoor learning Lead for Snapdragons is with us throughout June and July and has been spending time with all ages groups. Tim is an experienced Forest School practitioner and has been sharing this with the children which they have loved!

TERM DATES

The last day of this term for any term time only children who do not receive funding is Wednesday the 21st of July. For children that receive funding, their final day is Friday the 16th of July.

If your child is all year round, uses funded hours and you are unsure how much of the summer is covered by funding please get in touch and we will be more than happy to help.

Please may we also send a polite reminder to inform us of any school leavers final day with us. Thank you to everyone who has already been in touch.

School transitions- If you child is going to school in September we are sure you are being bombarded with lots of information especially dates for the children to go in and have settling sessions. Last year we had tighter restrictions with this regarding children also attending nursery. This year settlings can go ahead and children can either attend nursery and then attending their school settling or vice versa. We just ask that children only attend each site once in that day to limit exposure and mixing.

Cathy has been busy carrying out weekly forest school sessions with the Beetle children as she finally is able to finish her Level 3 qualification due to the past years restrictions. Tim has been busy supporting her with this over the last few months. They have made a little sitting area in the woods and the children have been full of it as they have returned from the sessions. Once she has qualified she will be able to have more structure in offering Forest School to both pre-school groups. The children in Grasshoppers have been busy practicing their dressing skills with getting changed for P.E which Shannan has been leading with obstacle courses and different games. We are busy behind the scenes completing transition documents for schools and having consultations with teachers either through visits or phone calls.

What a wet and soggy month May has been! It is completely different from a year ago when we were all in lockdown and the sun was beaming!

We just want to thank you all for bearing with us this last year! Thank you to many families who have joined us but have not yet looked around the setting due to the restrictions. As things ease we will be starting to reopen tours around the nursery. We are also planning an open morning so parents can have the opportunity to come and look around once again and see the lovely environment where the children have so much fun! Once we have a date finalised and plans in place we will be sending out a separate email with the full details.

Thank you to all parents who have been contributing to our focus planning sheets. We are really getting to grips with this now and these will start to be emailed to you directly rather than handed out moving forwards in the next few weeks.

Pre school staff will also be starting to liaise with schools this half term and prepare children’s moving on forms. If your child is starting school in September they won’t have an assessment grid this term as it is replaced by the transition forms.

Firstly a few dates for your diaries-

Parents Evening will take place again in June. Last year we had parents evenings over the phone rather than face to face. However this time we can give you the option of either a phone call or you may come in and meet your child’s key person face to face outside. If you opt to meet outside we just ask that children are not discouraged from playing in the garden as there will be other parents evenings going on at the same time and we are still trying to be sensible with contact.

Please speak directly to your child’s key person to arrange a slot. The dates for each room are as follows-

Tuesday 15th June- Pre-school Beetle room (Cathy, Ashaya, Tilly, Charlotte, Ayesha, Orlagh)

Wednesday 16th June- Pre-school Grasshoppers (Shannan, Paige, Cat)

Thursday 17th June- Butterflies (Katherine, Emily, Sophie, Anna, Maisie, Ella)

Tuesday 22nd June- Dragonflies (Laura, Nancie, Celeste, Jenny, Sarah)

Monday 28th June- Baby Cottage (Roz, Charlotte, Sophie Mc)

Wednesday 30th June- Baby Barn and Kayleigh ( Sophie, Halle, Kayleigh, Lucy, Tia)

Books of the month

Little Red Riding Hood, Mr Gumpy’s Outing and Spot

Next month they will be; Jack and the Beanstalk, Jasper’s beanstalk, That’s not my..

What we have been doing this month

Babies

Babies have had a lovely month. We have been doing lots of painting, exploring cornflour and mixings water and flavoured tea bags! We also have been climbing and exploring our new soft play and ball pits which the babies adore! We have been taking care of the babies by practising washing them and brushing their teeth too!

They have been continuing with experimenting with potions and flowers and water. The role play has been such a strong influence in the room with the children exploring all our real life items and tea sets.

April 2021

Hi Everyone,

We hope everyone had a nice Easter Break and holiday for those term time only children. The weather is really starting to change and Spring is in full swing.

We have been getting outside as much as possible to enjoy the change in Season. Please can we ask that all children now start bringing named sun cream and a hat in to nursery. It is easier if we can keep this here but please speak to your child’s key person if you wish it to go home in their bag.

A few reminders/dates for diaries…..

Please can we politely remind all parents that the session times start at 8am and end at 6pm. We open at 7.30am but these are pre-booked early drop off spaces. Staff will not be able to collect children until their start time due to preparing for the day ahead.

On Tuesday 11th May we will be having Concept Photography coming to Nursery to take outdoor pictures of the children. We had them in just before Christmas and it was a huge success. We will be running in the same way as before and we will only be able to offer this to children attending that day due to the slight restrictions still in place.

We have two Bank Holiday Mondays in May and we are open as usual. Please can we ask you just pop us an email if your child won’t be attending these days so the kitchen can work out their catering.

Also we know we sent out a separate email regarding parents turning across the traffic from the Saltford/Bath direction. Please can you go round the roundabout as residents opposite are concerned there have been near misses with people cutting across the traffic.

PRE-SCHOOL PARENTS- We can’t believe that it is that time of year again when we are thinking about the children going to school. They should have all been given their name of school now for September. Please can you pop us an email of where your child will be going so we can make sure we ensure a smooth transition. Also please let us know your child’s last day with us so we can ensure we have their end date down correctly. Any questions regarding funding over this time please speak to Felicity in the office and she can assist you.

April’s books of the Month have been; Rosie’s walk, Elmer and the Three little Pigs.

Babies off for a walk in Saltford.

Butterflies

Butterflies have had green fingers this month with planting their own sunflower seeds! they have been carefully watering them and watching them grow. The Toddlers have also shown a keen interest in scissors and have been using their fine motor skills to master how to hold the scissors to make cuts in paper and textures such as playdough. We have also been doing lots of messy play and experiments.

March 2021

Hi Everyone,

March has already been a busy month at Nursery. We have lots planned and lots to look forward to! We have enjoyed the change in weather and have been getting outside as much as possible!

A few reminders

Please can we remind parents and carers that we need to be careful when driving into nursery. We ask parents to be considerate of speed especially when driving round the corner and into the car park. As well as parents walking to nursery, we also use outdoor areas for drop offs and pick ups. This means that these spaces can become busy.

Please can parents check with their children’s key person that their wellies and waterproof fit correctly. Please can we also remind parents to provide their child with a named water bottle each day and this is to contain water only.

At the beginning of March we opened our additional baby space in our building in the garden. Both the Baby Barn and Cottage have had a tidy and redecorate. We are pleased to share the photos of our beautiful baby spaces with you.

January/February 2021

Happy New year Everyone, we know it is very belated but January and February have been such busy months! We apologise for not sharing our Nursery News sooner!

The children have all settled back into nursery well, this includes children who have started nursery for the first time or moving to a new room.

Thank you everyone for still adhering to our social distancing and using the hand washing stations. Please can I just remind you that toys from home are not to be brought in unless they are a comforter. This has started to creep in and its something that we would like to avoid, to minimise cross-contamination and spread of germs back and forth.

a7a6a4d7-f90e-433b-8ec7-cafb55b9780c.jpg

A little update on what we have been up to this month…

January stories have been The Tiger Who Came to Rea and the Poems for the Very Young.

February stories are Goldilocks and the Three Bears and Each Peach, Pear Plum.

March stories are Billy goats gruff and Kipper.

Babies-

Our new baby room has started to have furniture and resources added and will be opening on Monday 1st March. Once it is finished we will be sure to share some pictures with you all! We will also be sharing some pictures of our beautiful cottage which has been repainted and will have some new resources too!

We have a few staff changes in babies. Firstly our lovely Abbie is off at the end of February, we will be so sad to see her go but wish her all the luck in her new adventure working at the hospital. Abbie has been with us for 4 years now and we will miss her so much. She has settled so many of our babies over the years including lots of our Pre-School children.

Once the new unit opens we will have two Head of Babies, Roz and Sophie, who I’m sure you have already seen around the nursery at hand overs. Hannah will be overseeing both units as Unit Co-ordinator.

Babies have been exploring lots these past few months- including the Tiger that Came to Tea. We have also been making dens, seen snow in the garden for the first time, explored ice play and welly boot printing.

c0aa1931-5375-4449-9076-571e78b90576.jpg

Dragonflies-

Our lovely Laura who has been in our Butterfly room for three years was successful in interviewing for the Head of Dragonfly role. She has moved up this week to join them and is very excited!

Our Dragonflies have loved learning about the Tiger who Came to Tea and Goldilocks and the Three Bears from hosting tea parties in their water tray, making current buns for the song of the month and painting with ice, we even made porridge playdough!

Printing with cars

Printing with cars

Butterflies have been there normal active selves! They have loved exploring the outside looking for ice and loved it when we had the snow to play in! They have had a keen interest in cars and always love nothing more than getting messy and have made their own garage and car wash!

Sunshine Circles

All staff have now accessed the sunshine circle training which they have been implementing more into nursery life. This is a little circle time which really focuses on the children’s well being. It is a form of TheraPlay which focuses on forming secure attachments, helps confidence and making relationships. The children have been thoroughly enjoying this especially having lotion on their hands. If you wish to have more information about sunshine circles please speak to Ella.

Thank you for all for the positive feedback we have been receiving since reopening in the Summer pre covi-id. If you would like to share your thoughts please feel free to complete a day nurseries review card, they can be found in the main door by the office. Alternatively if you would like to email us with any comments or suggestions you may have you can always pop it in an email.

On Thursday 5th March we will be celebrating World Book Day. We are encouraging children to come dressed up as their favourite character from a book. Please do not feel you need to spend lots of money on costumes these can be home made and the more creative the better!

There will be winners in each age group for the most creative costume!

Merry Christmas Everyone!

MicrosoftTeams-image (2).png

What a lovely month we have had getting festive and having lots of fun across the nursery. We enjoyed an amazing Christmas lunch made by Carey and Nick on Wednesday. Our pre-school children have also been busy putting together a Christmas production - Angel Express.

Our stories this month were The Gruffalo’s Child and the Elves and the Shoemaker. The children have loved decorating Christmas trees, singing Christmas songs and making treasures to take home.

Our lovely Ella, who is currently on maternity leave, will be back with us in January and bringing her baby Edie to the baby room. For those of you who don’t know Ella she is our head of Early Years Practice, Deputy Manager and SENDCO. Hannah has done a great job covering Ella and will be taking on her own new role in the New Year as Unit Co-ordinator overseeing the current baby room and the new one due to open in the New Year.

The work is nearly completed on our additional Baby space and we look forward to sharing pictures with you all soon.

We will reopen on Monday 4th January as normal. Please remember that our hand washing stations will be in place and we ask you to continue to adhere to wearing masks and socially distancing at collection and drop off times.

Babies

Babies have had a lovely month. They made play dough and used natural resources like the forest in The Gruffalo’s child story. Babies love exploring natural materials and the different textures between their fingers. We also created a snow tuff tray and a candy cane shaving foam scene too! We made mince pies to take home too and they were very tasty!

Dragonflies

We have spent quite a bit of time in the garden this month as the children in this group love nothing more than jumping and exploring the outdoors especially the muddy puddles! We have added colours to the puddles which the children loved exploring.

We have also been getting festive, making cards to take home, creating salt dough decorations to hang on trees and making chalk snowmen pictures. We love dancing so have enjoyed having little parties and playing games in the sensory room.

Butterflies

Butterflies have been getting very creative this month and have loved decorating the rooms with all their artwork. They made salt dough shapes to hang on the Christmas tree, reindeer baskets and we made our own snow which we then built a train track in to create a Winter scene.

Pre School

Beetles and Grasshoppers have been busy creating the Angel Express production. This will be emailed out to parents shortly.

Beetles also this month have been interested in exploring different shapes. They developed this interest when they created Christmas tree pictures using shapes they cut out. They also made snowmen from shaving foam and made light pictures using their finger prints.

Grasshoppers went on a walk and collected leaves to make wreaths for their windows. We also have had a present wrapping station in the role play that the children have been busy using as a Santa’s workshop.

What a busy, strange year 2020 has been, I don’t think we ever could have expected this year!

We just wanted to say thank you to all our lovely families and for all the support during this difficult time. The staff have worked so hard to ensure the nursery is still the same place where the children have been able to laugh and grow. They have tried to keep things as normal as possible for the children. I know we have not escaped positive cases but we have managed to contain them as best we can! I am so proud of them all and how hard they have worked this year in particular.

So from all the team here at Snapdragons, Keynsham we wish you a Merry Christmas and a happy and healthy 2021!

Dressing up and exploring Autumn!

Welcome to our November Newsletter. It has been another busy month at Snapdragons, Keynsham!

f30f3a66-3342-4e64-83ec-3bd1634df110.jpg

What a busy month we have had!

Parents’ Evening took place at the beginning of the month. I know these were conducted slightly differently than before, but we understand it is still important to be able to have these catch ups with parents. I know some parents’ evenings have had to be rearranged. If you are still wanting to rearrange yours, or to book one, please let us know and we can try and accommodate this before the Christmas break.

Now the weather is taking a turn and becoming wet and cold please make sure you provide your child with the appropriate clothing. We do have some puddle suits at nursery but it is much easier if parents provide them if possible. Please check your child’s welly boots still fit and confirm with their key person as the children all grow so quickly! Hats and gloves will need to start coming in so we can ensure the children can access the outside as much as possible. Please make sure items are named.

Concept photography has been rearranged for Thursday 3rd December due to the recent lockdown. This will operate as per my previous post and will be outside with only the children who attend this session. If this can’t take place then I will send out an email to let all parents know. Please bring in a change of clothes for your child this day if you wish. The staff at Concept are going to try their best to get all orders back before Christmas.

Our learning over this month….

During October we looked at the books Owl Babies, Room on the Broom and Meg and Mog. The children loved exploring these books through storytimes and with different tuff trays, autumn experiences and, of course, dressing up for Spooky Spark week!

We are now well into our November planning and are looking at the books Goodnight Moon and Whatever Next!

Babies have been welcoming a few new babies to their group this month. They have been busy settling in and making lots of new friends! They have also been celebrating Diwali by exploring lots of colour and light activities and have had lots of walks under the trees in the pushchairs.

1a164114-e235-437f-bbfb-ff88e1850e77.jpg
imgpsh_mobile_save.jpg

Both of our Toddler rooms have been quite creative this month! Younger Toddlers experimented outside with welly boot painting, painting with powder paint in puddles and have been doing lots of junk modelling! Sarah has also made different props for nursery rhymes as well as a song board so the children can choose which songs they would like to sing at circle time.

Older Toddlers have been making potions with coloured water, recreating the Whatever Next Story and exploring lots of Autumn resources such as big and small pumpkins and the natural treasures we find in the garden, like leaves and conkers.

They loved dressing up for Spooky Sparks with all the children embracing the costumes and face paint!

154fe551-b8dd-4e01-bf0d-c87bb4c084ee.jpg

Pre School have had a great month! We have been doing some Autumn observational drawings, making our own “Owl Babies” and nests and witches’ homes for the characters in Room on a Broom.

The Nativity song practice is well underway at Keynsham. This year we are doing the Angel Express and all parents whose children are off to school in September will have been sent an email with instructions about filming your child singing their sent song.

I did send out a separate email regarding school spaces. Please remember you will need to apply for your child’s school place by January 2021 through your council’s website. If you need any help with this please speak to the office.

Hi Everyone,

What a busy month September was! We have loved welcoming everybody back into the nursery as well as welcoming lots of new families! The car park and entrances are busier than before! Please allow one parent in at a time. Thank you for adapting and your patience with this.

Now the weather is becoming wetter and then colder please make sure your child has appropriate clothing such as hats, gloves, coat, wellies etc; Please make sure items are named. Welly boots are now being used again. Please make sure these are replaced if you think they will no longer fit your little one.

Our FAQ’s and safer operating procedures are being regularly updated to ensure that we are following all guidance and keeping everyone as safe as we can. Both of these documents can be found on our website. Thank you for your continued support it really does mean a lot to us all.

It is important for us to try and minimise the exposure of children to other groups outside of their bubble and so encourage parents to only send their children to one setting if possible. In the event that this is not possible, you will need to complete the below agreement to allow us to monitor a child’s attendance cross-site.

We wanted to draw your attention to a new campaign from Public Health England (PHE) called Better Health – Every Mind Matters campaign. Most families have experienced some upheaval in their everyday lives during the pandemic and so PHE have provided these NHS-endorsed tips and advice to help children and young people’s mental wellbeing and to equip parents and carers with the knowledge to support them. There’s a range of advice from helping children with their return to school, through to sleep advice for younger children. We hope you find this helpful and of course if there is anything you find yourself needing further support with, please do let me (nursery manager) or key person know. You may also be interested in talking to Anna Gent, our Quality and Training Manager who is a trained Norland Nanny with a Maternity Practitioner qualification. She may be able to offer advice on sleep, mealtimes, challenging behaviour and establishing routines. You can #AskAnna in confidence at anna.gent@snapdragonsnursery.com.

Concept

Concept photography will be coming to Nursery on Thursday 13th November from 8am. This will be taking place in the garden. Unfortunately, due to the COV-ID restrictions this year we are unable to offer children who don’t attend this day a slot or siblings to come in. Children can still bring an additional outfit to wear. Children will be taken out in their bubble groups with cleaning taking place in between.

We normally celebrate our annual spooky spark night as we approach Halloween and Bonfire. Due to the COV-ID restrictions this will be unable to take place. However, we will still be doing creepy activities this month and if you wish please feel free to let your child come dress up in their spooky outfit during the week of Monday 26th October-Friday 30th October 2020.

Can we remind term time only parents that the half term week is approaching, and term time only children will be off Monday 26th October-Friday 30th October 2020.

Last Month…

This month we will be continuing with our Autumn activities and looking and talking about the books- Owl babies, Meg and Mog and Room on the Broom.

Our Monthly update

dbec6c61-588a-4ac5-a05a-615fd1b17cde.jpg

Welcome back to all our families who joined us in July. All the children have again settled so well especially those who have recently joined us and those who have moved to new rooms. Thank you to everyone for complying so well with the new procedures we have in place with the new hand washing stations and social distancing. We know it can sometimes be challenging when the weather is wet but thank you for all your patience. The drop off and pick up seem to be working well at the moment with the three entrances so we will not be introducing staggered drop off times at present. We will let you know if this is something that may be introduced in the future.

Ladybirds (Babies)

Babies have welcomed some new faces to their group this month. All the babies have been settling quickly and adapting well to their new surroundings and routines. They have loved being outside in the courtyard making those first marks in paint and lots of splashing in the water play on the warmer days.

Dragonflies (Younger Toddlers)

Lots of our older babies have now joined the Toddler room. They have been loving the new challenges the room faces with lots more opportunities for climbing and exploring. Dragonflies have been loving lots of water play, they have been busy baking biscuits and have been exploring lots of messy play like balloons in water, paint and gloop!

Butterflies (Older Toddlers)

Butterflies have had a lovely busy time especially in the garden. They have also been doing lots of experiments with paint and shaving foam and watching the effects of this. They have been looking at what they can find in the garden and then painting what they found and they have also been dancing to the wiggles their favourite songs and (Laura’s!)

Pre-School

Pre-school have been cooking this month, doing their own puppet shows and busy talking about the schools they are going to! We have been trying to work more on the children’s independence and self-help skills ready for school. We have been reading lots of school stories too! The children have also been doing lots of role play with the dolls house and tea set.

Can all children who are due or in receipt of Early years Entitlement funding please complete the documentation they should have received from the accounts team. If this could be completed as soon as possible they would be very grateful.

We will be waving farewell to some of our pre-school children this month as they embark on their journey to school. We will miss them all so much and the team are very glad they have had a few months to spend with them before they leave us! Please make sure you have let us know your child’s last day with us so we amend their finish date.

Messy play fun!

This is what coming to nursery is all about!

It has been a very wet week here at Snaps, Keynsham! However we have not let that stop us having lots of fun back at Nursery!

Thank you so much to all parents for being patient whilst we adapt our hand washing stations and new collection entrances to the wet weather! Staff try to bring children to entrances as quickly as possible.

Can I remind all parents that children will not able to attend nursery if they have had any medication such as calpol, cough syrup etc; in the morning. We cannot take the risk that this may mask a temperature/symptoms. If babies and children are teething we can still administer teething gel or crystals. Please make sure children are feeling 100% before nursery as we want everyone to be attending fit and well!

This week -the children have had lots of fun despite the rain and thunder!

Babies- Babies have been busy exploring colours by mixing paint and water in the courtyard and then painting the floors and walls! They have also been getting messy with cornflour and building towers.

Toddlers- Toddlers have been dancing, playing matching games and have been painting in the rain with powder paint, pots and water!

Pre-School have had lots of fun this week, hosting our own pretend tea parties, playing our own pictionary games and jumping in muddy puddles!

it is forecasting hot weather next week! Can we remind parents to please provide sun hats that can ideally stay here for the week rather than going back and forth. Also please remember to pop suncream on your child before coming in. Please make sure your child has a named suncream here for us to top up during the day!

We hope you all have a lovely weekend and we look forward to having more fun next week!

Love Everyone at Snapdragons Keynsham x

Pre-School have been experimenting this week. We have made our own hot air balloons that we have watched fly from a height! We have also made volcanoes and we had fun predicting what will happen next! We also have been looking at the different bugs in the garden and found lots of ladybirds.
